Work

Teen Services provides opportunities for youth to receive employment at an age which they are usually unable to attain employment on their own. Teens build their resume and learn interviewing techniques in an effort to expose youth to career paths. What sets POWER UP apart from other employment programs is our holistic approach and follow-up services. We prepare youth for employment through a work readiness curriculum offered in a group environment once per week and intensive one on one case management by qualified and caring social workers and a job developer. We assist youth in creating academic, personal, and professional goals that they can achieve both in the short and long term. This Work Component occurs over a series of 5 steps:

Step 1 - Participants intern in one of the departments of Hudson Guild and receive weekly job readiness/support workshops.

Step 2 - Teens are offered an “externship” - a workplace assignment outside of Hudson Guild in a field of that matches their career interest.

Step 3 - Youth obtain their GED/High School Diploma and receive post-secondary enrollment assistance, academic advisement, college/vocational site tours and workshops through a mixture of group and individual sessions.

Step 4 - Participants secure part-time employment while continuing to attend a post-secondary institution. Teens will receive modified job/readiness workshops/individual sessions to meet their professional needs.

Step 5 - Participants secure full time employment or continue on achieving a degree from a post-secondary institution and serve as mentors to incoming participants.

POWER-UP with Teen Services

We emphasize the importance of academic achievement, self awareness, social responsibility and setting goals for future aspirations. We seek to assist youth in achieving academic professional and personal success by providing a safe, supportive and nurturing environment through a variety of teen-driven programming.

Teen Services uses a holistic approach to meet each participants’ needs. By meeting the client where they are, we can then assess what services are appropriate to best serve the participant. Whether a participant is interested in school assistance, work placement or simply recreation, POWER-UP encompasses the resources to meet these needs. Teen Services also utilizes a strengths perspective approach with each participant and or family who walks in the door. We highlight a participant’s strengths and use this as motivation to strengthen and build upon other areas in which a participant may feel deficient in. We provide intensive one on one services as well as group supportive services aimed at enhancing a participant’s
academic, professional and personal areas. Services are provided by qualified, approachable, community-orientated, and knowledgeable staff who have backgrounds in Social Work, Education, Counseling, Physical Fitness, Sports Management, and Culinary Arts.

Education

Teen Services aims to provide youth with access to the educational resources needed to succeed. Through the Education Component of POWER UP, teens receive one-on-one attention and group support in tutoring, SAT preparation, GED and college preparation.

Teens involved in GED preparation receive supportive service from both the Department of Education and Hudson Guild. This partnership allows teens and young adults to receive group and one-on-one tutoring services during traditional class time as well as afterschool. Provided by social work staff, group support focuses on the themes of motivation, advocacy, work readiness among other topics.

Tutoring is also provided after school for any youth that needs extra assistance in a specific subject. Academic tutors are versed in Math, Science (Physics, Chemistry), History (social Studies, Global History), and English (English Lit, AP English).

In SAT preparation, teens are paired with volunteers who are caring, attentive, reliable, and aim to see the teen he or she works with succeed. Individual assistance occurs amongst a group of volunteers and students working in individual groups. This environment provides youth with the support and confidence to know they are not alone and that others may have the same questions or concerns as they do.

Students also have the option of receiving college preparation services. These services are provided in a combination of group workshops which assist youth in exploring what type of school or vocation they would like to pursue as well as the application and financial aid process. As part of being a member of POWER UP, teens also receive opportunities to visit colleges, universities and vocational programs to provide a tangible understanding of the lessons given in group workshops. Touring campuses allows teens to envision themselves at the next level of success. Once a teen receives this knowledge, they then receive dedicated attention from a caring adult who helps build confidence as well as guide them through completing personal statements, applications, financial aid process and answering questions or concerns along the way. The support continues once a youth is accepted to a college university or vocation.
